Care, Guidance and Support in School: One Secondary School’s Journey from Good to Outstanding "We agonised for weeks over the secondary school choice, our daughter has every single day come home with a smile on her face from school. If I was asked to describe the School I would have to say “A place where young people are nurtured and actively supported in their development not merely educated”"

Relationships and Context When Ofsted inspected Worle Community School in 2005, Care Guidance and Support were judged to be good. Knowing that the best learning outcomes can only be achieved when students are happy and their emotional health and well-being are nurtured, the school set itself the target of achieving an “outstanding” judgement for this aspect of its work at the following inspection. The journey to ‘outstanding’ involved significant change and development.
Information, Understanding and Insight Pastoral staff, governors and the senior team decided that the desired improvement had to be built on what was already working well and that a thorough review of current practice would be needed to assist with the preparation of a development plan. Discussions took place with staff, governors, students, parents and external agencies and a set of desired outcomes and ways forward was arrived at. Two key issues emerged from the review. One was the need to strengthen the team responsible for Care, Guidance and Support and the other was the need to improve and extend staff development by providing specialist training to key staff and improved training and induction for all other staff.
Action for Positive Change The development process was channeled through the school’s improvement planning processes and figured in the annual plan for each year of the project. Both key issues were addressed with an expansion of the staff team to include volunteer and trainee counsellors, a Learning Mentor (Behaviour) and a Parent Support Adviser. Linked to this, the use of students as part of the team through peer mentoring was introduced. Training was provided at a specialist level by Mike Beard and at a whole staff level by Trevor Bailey and two of his colleagues.
